2008 Việt Nam Work Camp Tentative Plan
Below is a tentative plan for discussion purpose only.
Objectives:
- Provide opportunities to see first hand why SM exists
- Provide opportunities for our young members to know more about their roots
- Establish relationship with local communities
- Establish scholarship program for newly completed schools
- Number of students needing scholarship
- Special cases
- Identify potential future projects in the area
- Classrooms to be built or upgraded
- Library, educational materials, computers
- What other things can be done to ensure students’ success
- Miscellaneous to collect:
- Personal journal of the experience to share with SM members and prospects
- Report to send to previous and potential sponsors / donors
- Pictures and video – current work camp project, potential future projects, conditions in areas
- Vignettes from students at the schools
Plan:
- Departure date: Friday May 23th
- Return date: Saturday June 7th
- Location: Likely to be in Can Tho province or another nearby southern province
- Cost: $2000 per person (could be more depending on 2nd week activities.) Cost to include roundtrip air fare from Houston to VN, in country transportation, food and lodging unless otherwise noted. Hotel is clean and comfortable, and will be double accommodation.
Needs:
- Passport
- Visa
- Immunization (see your doctor)
- Must be 18 and above. Under 18 yrs of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
General:
- Work site will be at a remote rural area of Can Tho or nearby southern province.
- Work activities are light to moderate labor, paint doors, furniture, wall. May include hauling dirt.
- Will spend time visit students and their families
- The group will include about 5 VN based college students and volunteers in addition to the US based team
2 weeks in VN
- First week will be working on one school and traveling
- Second week will be attending school completion ceremonies at two additional schools in nearby provinces and the debrief component of the work camp
- In country travel will be by bus. To get to the school sites we will walk, cross monkey bridges, take small ferries, and may include the use of “xe ôm”.
