vietnam educationOn Sunday, January 30, members and friends of Sunflower Mission joined hundreds of others in the Walkathon for Tsunami Victims at Alief Middle School in Houston, Texas to raise funds for the victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. About 3000 walkers, members of about 50 different Vietnamese-American organizations, raised over $61,000.

The Sunflower Mission walkers included Dr. Nam Hoang, AiChi Tran, Quynh Bui, Theresa Tran, Thao Nguyen, Thinh Nguyen, Elena Tran, NaNhi Tran, Sean Tran, Jack Hardison, Uyen Tran, Kevin Southwick, and several young volunteers from a local scout troop. The Sunflower Mission banner was displayed during the walk which made a 1.5-mile circuit around Alief Middle School. One of SM's Board members, Dr. Nam Hoang, was present to provide first aid.

The event was an opportunity for Sunflower Mission members to support and express their deep sorrow and sympathy for the tsunami victims, most of whom were Indonesian and Thai, geographical and cultural neighbors of Vietnam. It was an example of their willingness to organize and help when and where help is needed, much like they do for their main goal of responding to the drastic need for improved education in Vietnam.

Many of the walkathon organizers were from the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association or Vietnamese Community in Houston.

The prewalk presentation featured appearances by Congressman Al Green, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and newly elected State Representative Herbert Vo, the first Vietnamese-American elected to represent Texans in the Texas House of Representatives.
