Schools Built In 2009
Our school construction projects for 2009 included:
- Vinh Hoa 1 Elementary School in Vinh Hoa village, Ut Minh Thuong district, Kien Giang province. This is a 6 classroom school built to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for a growing student population of over 300. This new structure replaced 4 dilapidated classrooms that were neither safe nor repairable.
- Vi Dong 1 Elementary School in Vi Dong village, Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province. This is a 2 classroom school built to replace a satellite school in the area. Currently 112 students in grades 1 to 3 are attending the school.
- Lang Trung School in Son Hai village, Bao Thanh district, Lao Cai province. The funding and construction of this school were led by Mr. Phil Deering, an American motivated to take on the project after having witnessed the poor conditions of the area and the lack of adequate school facilities. Children from the Dao ethnic minority will be attending the school. Sunflower Mission acted as a fiscal agent and consultant to support Mr. Deering’s endeavor
- Additionally, we started a school maintenance program to inspect and restore 62 classrooms that Sunflower Mission has built from 2003 through 2007. As of December 2009, we completed the restoration of 25 classrooms and will complete the work on 37 additional classrooms by March 2010.
