An Hao - Oct. 2004
In August of 2004, the Board of Director approved the construction a four classrooms school in An Hao commune, Tinh Bien district, An Giang province. Sunflower Mission provided fund for 3 classrooms and the local community contributed fund for the fourth.
An Giang Province is located to the west of the Mekong Delta between the Tien Giang and Hau Giang Rivers and shares a 95-km border with Cambodia. It is next to the Cuu Long River and consists of a few midland areas and low mountains. An Hao commune is located about 80 km from the border of Cambodia.
An Hao commune was chosen for many reasons. It is one of the poorest communes in the Mekong Delta. Annual flooding of this region affects both agriculture and fish farming. The rice fields are often submerged with little to no production of rice crop. According to the World Bank, the Mekong River Delta poverty rate is over 40 percent and more so in rural areas. The 1998 Vietnam Living Standard Survey reports that the Mekong Delta net school enrollment for primary, secondary rank the lowest when compare to the average national net enrollment rate in 1998. They also have poorer quality of education; insufficient time spent studying due to housework, income earning activities, and poor health.
The construction of the school in An Hao began in September 2004 and completed on October 20, 2004. During the construction, our representative in Viet Nam worked closely with the local community leaders to complete the project with specific specifications and within budget. One of our members from the United States visited the construction of the school during its final phase and our Sunflower Mission volunteer in Viet Nam was presented at the school completion ceremony. In addition to the school, our representative in Vietnam secured other private fund to construct a bridge that will both serve the students and the local community. Sunflower Mission contributed 12,400 USD toward the school construction. This includes the three classrooms, three restrooms, a water pump, school furniture, and lighting fixtures.
This new school will provide safe and conducive learning environment for 320 students. As with many other schools Sunflower Mission constructed, we will continue close contact with educators and the students. Our Dao-Le scholarship program will further the education of many students in this region.
