Khanh Thanh Tan - 03/2005

educationFor the third year in a row, Sunflower Mission collaborated with YMCA International to impact education in the Mo Cay District. Sunflower Mission funded the construction of 2 classrooms, and YMCA International funded the construction of 4 classrooms, resulting in 6 new classrooms for the children at Khanh Thanh Tan commune.

Located 13 km to the south of the center of Mo Cay dist, Khanh Thanh Tan commune is a remote commune of the district. The numerous natural canals split the commune into small hamlets, which cause many difficulties to the transportation of the commune. The population here totals almost 14,000 people residing on the total of natural area of 1,646 ha. There are about 1600 children ages under 11 year old.

There are 6 degrading classrooms and 4 temporary classrooms in need of replacement for the safety of the children. In the rainy season, the unsafe classrooms interrupt the lessons of the students. They have to stop their lessons occasionally due to the dripping roof or the flooded floor. This rural area is still on the long waiting list for the government construction subsidies.

The goal of the people in Khanh Thanh Tan is to take steps to replace these 10 dilapidated classrooms. Sunflower Mission and YMCA International have joined together to make this a reality. Khanh Thanh Tan Commune took over the responsibilities for management of the school after the project is completed.

The direct beneficiaries are children currently studying in the classrooms. This fruitful and meaningful project is expected to be used for over 30 years and will meet the urgent need of classroom facilities for the recent students. Furthermore, it is expected to also encourage many other children currently not in school to attend school. The children will be able to keep attending school in the rainy season and winter.
