Thanh Thoi B - March, 2003

vietnam educationIn collaboration with YMCA International Services, Sunflower Mission has funded and completed the construction of 2 classrooms at Thanh Thoi B Primary school. This school is in the district of Mo Cay, Ben Tre Province.

Ben Tre is approximately 100 kilometers from Saigon. Thanh Thoi B Primary school is located in a remote commune, where roads for vehicles are almost nonexistent. Project volunteers have to travel for over an hour to get to the worksite. This trip included a bus ride, a ferry ride and plenty of walking on dirt roads.

Project volunteers from the United States worked with their Vietnamese peers and local community volunteers from Thanh Thoi B on the final stages of construction.

This project is an investment in the lives of the poor children living in remote areas of Vietnam, as education is the key to their futures. The following are just a few of the benefits that the project provides:

  • Elementary school-aged children have a beautiful and functional place to
    further their education.
  • The school is built on a high ground which will reduce chances for flooding
during the rainy season. That means the children can attend classes throughout
the rainy season when much of the countryside is flooded.
  • This school serves 80-100 children per year for approximately 30 years.
  • For most of the children, the school is their only exposure to a water closet
and toilet, and it is crucial in addressing health and sanitation issues that
    exist within their villages.
