Binh Thanh - March 2006
This is a 2 class room project, completed in March 2006, for Kinh Khang Chien village in Binh Thanh commune, Thanh Binh district, Dong Thap province. This village is a new development site where very poor people currently living in low lying areas along canals are being relocated. Presently, 160 families already moved to this site and another 140 other families will do so within the coming months. The children under schooling age are 150, among them, 118 go to school, 32 others have abandoned their education. The average daily income of the village’s inhabitants is 1USD/ person. Only 35% of the households have some land for cultivation, the remainder work for wages for others.
The Kinh Khang Chien village has 03 temporary classrooms with 118 students and 6 teachers divided into 2 shifts: morning shift with 03 classes (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade) and afternoon shift with 03 classes (1st, 4th, 5th grade). To meet the needs for classrooms at this village, Sunflower Mission funded the construction of 2 classrooms and ancillary equipment, and as the number of students increases, will evaluate funding for additional classrooms. The land has been given by the local government as their contribution to the project.
