My Qui - June 2005

educationMy Qui elementary school is a 3 classrooms project completed with desks, fans and lights. This project was completed with a work camp in June 2005.

Up to 10 Sunflower Mission (SM) members and supporters paid their own way to visit the school. The SM team met with the school and government officials and shared friendship meals with teachers and workers. At the completion ceremony, SM presented 100 gifts and refreshments to attending students and/or local children.

SM funded for the construction of the 3 classrooms while the local community paid for land, fencing and toilets. The local community is seeing a very rapid growth in population, and at the same time, a serious lack of school facilities. Therefore, the people in My Qui have asked for the support of SM in bringing school facility to the area so that their children will have the same opportunity to pursue their basic education.

My Qui is located in the remote area of Thap Muoi district in Dong Thap province. Before the completion of the new school, the children would complete 1st and 2nd grades together in a dilapidated bamboo hut and then have to go to another location about than 2 miles away to go to 3rd grade. This condition has caused children to either drop out of school or perform poorly compares to national standard. The average family income in this area is less than $20/month, primarily from working in the Mekong River or in farming.
