Making Space for New Memories

by Linh Ngo

Eighteen years ago, during my first Workcamp, the school we built had only three classrooms. This school is much larger, with six classrooms, a library, a STEAM room, and even a playground. In fact, I was so fascinated by the school itself that I may have been more excited to explore it than to start working. Yet despite all the changes, one thing felt wonderfully familiar: the smiles on the students. As the students grew more comfortable with our presence, their smiles reminded me that while buildings, resources, and surroundings may evolve, the joy and curiosity of children remain timeless.

This week, I have the privilege of leading Team #2, made up of Van, Y Lan, Caden, and Connor. We were also joined by a local student named Tiên, whose energy and willingness to help quickly made her part of our team. Our mission was ambitious: to paint an entire classroom, create a mural, and prepare the space for an opening ceremony just a few days away. By the end of the day, we had completed the first coat on all the walls and begun outlining our mural. It was a satisfying start and a testament to what can happen when people come together with a shared purpose.

We wrapped up our first day just as a heavy afternoon rainstorm rolled through, drenching the campus for thirty minutes before moving on. Somehow, it felt like the perfect ending, a reminder that not every part of the journey will be predictable, but every part becomes part of the story.

Day 1 is officially in the books. More importantly, I can already see new friendships forming, conversations deepening, and connections being made. The projects we complete this week will leave a lasting impact, but so will the relationships built along the way.

Eighteen years after my first Workcamp, I’ve realized that the most valuable souvenirs are rarely the photos or the places themselves. They are the memories, friendships, and moments that stay with us long after the journey ends. And judging by Day 1, I’ll need to make room for a few more of those.
