Work Camp 2026 Begins!

Our Work Camp team has touched down in Vietnam and has made their way to An Giang province! This incredible group includes volunteers from all over the world and our very own college scholarship recipients. For the next week, they will oversee the completion of our newest elementary school, which includes classrooms, a library, and a playground. They will also host workshops for the local students and engage with the community in cultural exchange activities.

Eighteen years ago, during my first Workcamp, the school we built had only three classrooms. This school is much larger, with six classrooms, a library, a STEAM room, and even a playground. In fact, I was so fascinated by the school itself that I may have been more excited to explore it than to start working. Yet despite all the changes, one thing felt wonderfully familiar: the smiles on the students. As the students grew more comfortable with our presence, their smiles reminded me that while buildings, resources, and surroundings may evolve, the joy and curiosity of children remain timeless.

Today marked our first day at the school site for Sunflower Mission Workcamp 2026. This is my fifth Workcamp, and it feels especially meaningful as it is the first time I have the opportunity to share this experience with my significant other.

On the very first day of Workcamp, our journey was quickly tested by unexpected challenges. Our bus driver, confronted with treacherous terrain, muddy landslides, and waist-deep puddles, considered turning back. By day’s end, he was ready to quit. Yet to our deep gratitude, he returned the next morning and every morning after, with growing confidence and mastery, skillfully navigating the rugged path ahead.
